It is with the deepest sadness that we report the death of Professor Michael Majerus,
the instigator of this survey. He died peacefully after a short but severe illness
during the night of 26/27 January.
Mike studied ladybirds
for over 30 years and had amazing enthusiasm and understanding of entomology, evolutionary
genetics and science in general. He was an inspiration to all those who had the
privilege of working with him and to others who listened to him speaking so passionately.
Mike's deep knowledge of ladybird ecology gave him great insight and confidence
in predicting the extremely rapid spread of the harlequin ladybird. Mike will be
greatly missed by many, including all who are involved in the UK and Harlequin Ladybird
Surveys. Mike's inspiration will continue to drive us to find out more about ladybirds.
